PLASMAVITA
HEALTHCARE II GMBH
Plasmavita Healthcare II GmbH, based in Vienna, is a modern company specialising in the collection of human blood plasma for further processing into pharmaceuticals.
Plasmavita plays a leading role in the collection of plasma donations and, therefore, in patient care.
HOW DOES PLASMA DONATION WORK?
Like donating blood, blood is collected from a vein in the arm using a sterile needle and cannula. In a closed tube system which is only used once, the blood flows to a centrifuge where the blood cells are separated from the blood fluid – the plasma.
The blood cells are then returned to the body, while the plasma is collected in a bottle.
The whole process takes place right next to the donor. A special medical device controls the process so that the plasma donation is as comfortable as possible.
How much plasma a person can donate depends primarily on their body weight. The entire process of donation takes about 45 minutes.
WHO CAN BE A PLASMA DONOR?
To become a plasma donor, you must be over 18 years old and weigh more than 50 kilograms. In order to determine whether all other health requirements are met, the donor’s health status is assessed in an interview and they are examined by an in-house doctor. Finally, a laboratory sample is taken and examined before final approval as a plasma donor.
HOW OFTEN CAN YOU DONATE PLASMA?
Since plasma donations hardly put any strain on the body, up to 50 donations in any reference year (12 months after the start of donation) are possible. A rest period of at least two days is required between donations.
Depending on the total protein and immunoglobulin values found in your laboratory samples, the length of time between donations may be increased.
WHAT DO I PERSONALLY GAIN FROM DONATING PLASMA?
Apart from the fact that you are saving the lives of others with your plasma donation, you benefit from regular examinations by a doctor which ensure that you are always informed about your current state of health. In addition, there is financial remuneration for each donation.
HOW IS A DONOR DEEMED SUITABLE?
A number of tests are required to determine whether you are a suitable plasma donor. Among other things, blood pressure, pulse, body temperature and body weight are measured, and haemoglobin levels are tested.
These parameters are recorded before each plasma donation. Before the first donation and at regular six-month intervals thereafter, more thorough medical examinations are also carried out. Further tests are also carried out to determine the safety of the blood plasma, including through testing for HBV, HCV, HIV, and syphilis.
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF INTENTIONALLY GIVING FALSE INFORMATION?
If, for whatever reason, you have doubts about whether you are, in fact, suitable as a donor, please talk to us about it right away – the act of donating is about other people’s health and lives!
If a donor knowingly gives false information, this will lead to exclusion from our donation facilities and, if others are harmed as a result, the donor may face criminal charges.
